Sunrise Set Off (D.Philpot) |
22:00 Today
was interesting to say the least, I do not want to relive this day ever again.
A 4am start followed by a 2 hour walk to the ranger station, where apparently we
had to sign into the park so to speak, led us to find out that the German guy
didn’t in fact have a “formal reservation” only an informal receipt. With Costa Ricans being so tight and official
when it comes to paperwork, there being no phone, satellite phone or internet
in the area, we only had one choice.

We
walked back to Carate where we camped after trying to find, or bribe, for the
use of a satellite phone where we met a very nice guide from Chile who
knew both Reading and Paravia (both of our home towns). It was also discovered that there was a
chance of boarding an empty plane if one were to land for $20 which is a lot
cheaper than the $160 taxi someone told us about. A Spider Monkey was up in a tree which felt
hard to appreciate with the situation we were in.
We
got the “bus” back to Puerto Jimenez, found the office, got the official stamp
needed...

The Office Of The Official Stamp (D.Philpot) |
... said goodbye to our guide friend (who offered me a job for being a
Marine Biologist too), then got the 13:30 “bus” back to Carate (totalling 7.5
hours at least spent sat on this infernal vehicle). At least we had our health unlike a
ladies friend who we met on the “bus.” We also got to see a few Toucans so in a way in was worth it:

Right Out Of A Story Book (D.Philpot) |
Lesson
Learned: If you ever receive a confirmation, or
anything, in a foreign language…. Translate all of it! Especially the “Notas
importas” box that stands out. My life
beliefs “Win some, lose some” and “expect nothing” also come into mind again.
Again we
walked up to the ranger station armed with extra fruit, food, water (in a bag
that melted and broke) and the official confirmation of our time in the park
where we pitched our tent for another night outside of the park.
