• Day 073: Tuesday March 13th

23:30 I agreed to go on a bird hike at 06:20, saw a Tiger Heron on a nest and a Barred Ant-shrike hopping about a tree, and then returned for some much needed coffee.

On the way to the lab for another shell-o-rama there was an Anteater by the side of the trail staring right at me and a couple of other members of staff which was very cute, and then during this shell-o-rama we found many individuals that I have not seen before. We also had a visit by a Harlequin Crab that decided to wander into the lab.

After another “optional” snorkel session was enjoyed by all, here we hung out with Tina the Turtle again but then our time out in the water was interrupted by smoke...

Within 5 minutes it had disappeared, at which point quite a few people had already got out in a somewhat chaotic fashion to go and investigate it so I for one presumed enough people had gone seeming there was no smoke etc. now.  Turns out the blaze was quite small, covering an area of perhaps 5 m2, though was eventually tackled by everyone who rallied tubs of water back and forth to soak the ground and everything dry in the vicinity. It is believed that this fire was caused by a cigarette as a fire in the park has not been heard of for many many years, something different always happens right…

I felt a little rough for a while we walked, well… I ran to catch up, with the group to the upper stream where there wasn’t really anything to note apart from that it is now pretty dry.

Around sunset and high tide 2 of the girls (students) were trying to write in the sand and take pictures, with an emphasis on the try as it was very entertaining to watch.  Immediately after we helped gather wood for a nice bonfire we had hanging out with various groups of girls (they we nearly all girls).  It was interesting to note ‘the doubling’ in number of Harlequin Crabs about with each day, and also some spider-like flat crabs were about too.  Clearly I’ve had a late night tonight - here's the crab:
